Cases show the role that nouns play in a sentence. There are 6 cases, 3 genders with both singular and plural options to account for. After a quick calculation, I arrive at 36 possibilities to consider for a Russian noun each time it appears in a sentence. Russian cases can be overwhelming to learn. But it doesn’t have to with the right approach. The secret here is to build your knowledge step by step.
The first step is to understand when which case is needed.
The table below summarises the role each case plays in a sentence. I used English sentences for reference. The Russian translation of the word “book” is included to show how the endings may vary from one case to the other.
The second step is to learn and practise the endings. Focus on each case at a time. For example, spend a week or two practising the Accusative case before you move on to the Genitive case. With enough practice, the endings will become second nature so you won’t have to think hard before words appear on your lips.
The Russian case system may be complex, rigorous and full of rules. But the truth is many people before you have learned it, and so can you. It just takes patience, practice and a good course!
I've created the Russian Cases course for A1-A2 and the Russian Cases course for B1-B2 language level students who want to conquer them. With easy-to-follow explanations and vigorous practice, these courses will help you take your sentence-building skills to the next level.
Test your knowledge of Russian cases to see which course is right for your language level.
Do you know how to build the below sentences in Russian? These Russian cases courses teach you exactly that!
There are 2 types of tasks in the quizzes:
Put the words in brackets into the appropriate case & add correct prepositions (if required) OR
Translate the sentences into Russian
As you type multiple answers in the fields provided, please don't use any punctuation marks.
Finally, the bonus tip — as you practise Russian cases, make mistakes! The use of incorrect endings won’t stand in the way of your communication with Russians — you will still be perfectly understood and even admired for learning their native language. Some people may even offer to correct your endings. This is by far the best and fastest way to learn.
