How to Say Goodbye in Russian

Russian Goodbye

Goodbyes are inevitable. Learning to say goodbye in Russian can help you exit conversations while implying that you’ll soon be speaking again. Here are some of the most common ways to say goodbye in Russian.

The two most basic goodbyes you’ll encounter in Russian are до свида́ния and пока́.

До свида́ния translates to “goodbye,” and пока́ is more like “bye.” The main difference between the two is one of formality. До свида́ния works well in situations when you’re speaking to someone you’re not on a first-name basis with. Пока́ is good for informal situations, like when you’re among friends.

Sometimes we want to use more time-specific goodbyes appropriate for the time of day. If you want to tell someone to “have a nice day/evening,” say хоро́шего дня/ве́чера. Say хоро́ших выходны́х to wish them a good weekend.

If you’d rather acknowledge that you'd like to see the other person soon:

  • до ско́рого see you soon

  • уви́димся! later!

  • уви́димся по́зже see you later

  • до за́втра till tomorrow

  • до сле́дующего ра́за till next time

  • поговори́м с тобо́й по́зже talk to you later

  • на свя́зи stay in touch
