Why Learn Russian Cursive?

In general, Russians write in cursive when handwriting. So if you want to understand anything that was written down in Russian, you’ll need to know cursive. Russian cursive looks very different from print. Because of this, you can’t always guess the letters unless you’ve already studied them. You may think you know the Russian alphabet, but until you’ve studied cursive, you only know one side of it.

Some students started learning Russian cursive because they were craving for beauty and creative self-expression. Have you ever noticed how seeing someone’s handwriting reminds you of their personality? Their script may be neat and elegant, or large and loopy. What will your Russian handwriting reveal about your personality?

There is enough scientific evidence which suggests that handwriting can help you remember things. This is what helped me learn Japanese characters fast. Writing them down by hand worked far better than other techniques of memorisation. Next time you need to make a handwritten note to remember things, such as daily tasks, key information from a lesson, or inspirational quotes, do it in Russian!

A handwritten note also helps us express how we feel towards other people much more powerfully and personally than a typed note. Would you like to make your Russian friend's day? A handwritten birthday card or a thank-you letter in Russian to show love and thoughtfulness will do just that.

Don’t expect perfection right away. When you're just getting started, your Russian cursive may look a little shaky at first. But as you practise, your handwriting and ability to read Russian cursive will improve over time.

Here are the cursive shapes of Russian Cyrillic letters for you to practise. Note that every person's handwriting is unique. So if you choose not to join the letters or if you make fewer loops, you will not be misunderstood. Be creative and find your own Russian handwriting style!
